What is ADHD?

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that can affect attention, behaviour, and daily functioning. It can look different across children, teens, and adults.

ADHD symptoms generally fall into three areas: inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Some people mainly experience difficulties with attention, while others experience more noticeable hyperactivity or impulsivity. Many people experience a combination of these symptoms.

Inattention can look like being easily distracted, making careless mistakes, forgetting things, struggling to listen or stay focused, having difficulty staying organized, or not following through with tasks.

Hyperactivity can look like frequent fidgeting, restlessness, excessive talking, difficulty sitting still, or finding like it is hard to slow down.

Impulsivity can look like interrupting others, having difficulty waiting, acting before thinking things through, or making quick decisions without considering the consequences.

If attention-related concerns are affecting learning, work, or relationships, an assessment can provide the clarity you’ve been looking for. You don’t need a referral to get started, and you don’t need to have all the answers before you reach out.
Not every assessment results in an ADHD diagnosis, and that’s okay. You will receive a thorough written report outlining the findings and what they mean. The report will also include clear recommendations, whether or not ADHD is part of the picture. Understanding what is going on is always the goal, regardless of the outcome.
The core process is similar, but the information we gather depends on age. For children and teens, we look closely at school functioning, behaviour, and input from parents and teachers. For adults, we focus more on daily functioning, work or post-secondary demands, and relationships. In every assessment, we consider how these concerns are showing up across different areas of life.
A lot. The report from your assessment can be used to access school accommodations, workplace supports, funding programs, or to guide next steps with your family doctor or other healthcare providers. It also simply gives you language for your experience, which, for many people, is its own form of relief.
