Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my child needs counselling?
Emotional ups and downs are a normal part of childhood. However, counselling may be helpful when your child seems to be having a harder time than usual managing emotions, behaviour, relationships, school, or changes in their life. You may notice changes such as withdrawal, frequent meltdowns, increased sensitivity, sleep difficulties, school concerns, or challenges with peers or family.
Child psychologists help children understand and express their thoughts and feelings in healthy ways. The goal is not to “fix” a child, but to help them develop tools to manage what they are experiencing now and in the future. Child psychologists are empathetic and compassionate, but they are also impartial. For this reason, they can provide perspective that may be difficult for close family members and friends to offer.
Child counselling at Stride Psychology is currently offered at a rate of $220–$235 per hour, depending on the psychologist. Many extended health benefit plans cover counselling either partially or in full.
Yes. Depending on your child’s age and needs, our child psychologists can work collaboratively with parents and caregivers. We also offer parent coaching to help caregivers better understand their child’s needs, strengthen the parent-child relationship, and explore parenting strategies that support the family as a whole. Sessions may involve parents only, the child, or the family together, depending on what is most helpful.
Yes. Children can feel anxious, sad, overwhelmed, or stressed, even if they do not always show it outwardly. Because children may not always have the words to explain what they are experiencing internally, parents may not always know everything their child is carrying. Counselling can help children better understand what they are feeling and receive support in a way that makes sense for them.
