What is Austim Spectrum Disorder (ASD) ?

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that shapes how a person communicates, connects with others, and experiences the world around them. While signs of autism often appear in early childhood, many individuals, especially those with more subtle traits, may not receive a diagnosis until later in life.

Autism can involve differences with social communication, understanding social cues, adapting to changes in routine, and managing sensory sensitivities. Many autistic individuals also have
meaningful strengths, including strong attention to detail, deep interests, creativity, and unique ways of problem-solving.

Autism Evaluations in Calgary

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an autism assessment and what does it involve?
An autism assessment is a comprehensive evaluation that looks at social communication, repetitive behaviours, sensory sensitivities, and developmental history. It typically involves clinical interviews, standardized testing, and structured observation. For children, we gather input from parents and often teachers as well. For adults, we explore how traits have shown up across your lifetime including the ways you may have learned to mask or adapt along the way.
We assess individuals of all ages, from young children (2.5 years) to adults. There is no age that is too early or too late to seek answers. Whether you’re a parent with concerns about your toddler, a teenager who has always felt unique, or an adult who has spent years wondering, a thorough assessment can provide meaningful clarity at any stage of life.
Autism can look different from person to person. Some children and adults have traits that are more subtle, masked, or misunderstood, which can make it harder to recognize without a thorough assessment. At Stride Psychology, we look at the full picture, including strengths, challenges, developmental history, sensory experiences, and day-to-day functioning.
Not every assessment results in a diagnosis, and that’s okay. You will receive a thorough written report outlining the findings and what they mean. The report will also include clear recommendations, whether or not Autism is part of the picture. Understanding what is going on is always the goal, regardless of the outcome.
A lot. An autism diagnosis can help open the door to the right supports, accommodations, and next steps. The assessment report may be used to access school supports, workplace accommodations, funding programs, counselling, or guidance from healthcare providers. For many individuals and families, this clarity can bring a sense of relief and direction.
