Intellectual Disability involves challenges with intellectual functioning, such as reasoning, problem-solving, planning, and learning. It also involves challenges with adaptive functioning, which refers to everyday life skills such as communication, self-care, home living, independence, academics, work, and safety.

PDD (Persons with Developmental Disabilities) and AISH (Assured Income for
the Severely Handicapped) provide community-based and financial supports to
eligible individuals in Alberta. A psychological assessment is often required as
part of the application process and typically looks at intellectual functioning and
adaptive functioning.
Alberta residents may be eligible for PDD or AISH if they meet the program
criteria. PDD focuses on adults with developmental disabilities who need
community-based support, while AISH provides financial assistance to adults
whose permanent medical condition or disability substantially limits their ability to
earn a living. A psychological assessment is required as part of the application
process.
The assessment includes a clinical interview, cognitive testing, rating scales, and
a review of relevant background information. The goal is to produce a detailed,
well-supported report that reflects the individual’s functioning and supports the
documentation requirements of the funding program.
A complete PDD/AISH assessment is $1,645.
