Frequently Asked Questions

What is parent coaching and how is it different from family therapy?

Parent coaching is focused specifically on you as the parent — your strategies, your responses, your understanding of your child’s needs. Rather than bringing the whole family into the room, coaching sessions give you dedicated space to reflect, learn, and problem-solve with a psychologist who can offer guidance tailored to your situation. It’s practical, skills-focused, and designed to create change that ripples out into your home life.

Parent coaching is for any parent who feels stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure of how to support their child — whether your child has a formal diagnosis like ADHD or autism, is struggling emotionally or behaviourally, or you simply feel like your current approach isn’t working and you want to do better. You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit from coaching. Many parents come to us simply wanting to feel more equipped and less reactive.

Sessions are tailored to your specific concerns, but common areas include understanding your child’s behaviour and what’s driving it, improving communication and connection, managing meltdowns and emotional dysregulation, navigating school challenges, setting consistent and effective boundaries, and supporting a child with a diagnosis or complex needs. We work on what matters most to you and your family right now.

That depends on your goals and your situation. Some parents find that a handful of focused sessions gives them the tools and perspective they need. Others find ongoing coaching valuable as their child grows and new challenges emerge. We’ll discuss your goals at the outset and check in regularly to make sure the process is moving in the right direction for you.

Absolutely — in fact, this is one of the most common reasons parents seek coaching. Receiving a diagnosis for your child is only the beginning. Understanding what it means day to day, how to advocate for your child at school, how to adjust your parenting approach, and how to take care of yourself in the process — that’s where parent coaching comes in. We help you turn a report into real, livable change at home.
